These days, we want to remember Marcelo Dascal on the first anniversary of his death.

In this year, Marcelo’s thoughts as well as his teachings have been constantly present to us all.

However, we cannot deny how much we all miss him.

This site, an expression of the IASC community, is available to publish the memories that the members of the association would like to share.

The news of the death of Marcelo Dascal has left the entire IASC community speechless and unoriented.

For this reason, we intend to organize an occasion for reflection and confrontation between those who have known him and/or have studied his writings.

We decided to set up “The Marcelo Dascal Lectures” and we are particularly grateful to the Head of the Department of Civilization and Forms of Knowledge of the University of Pisa, Prof. Pierluigi Barrotta, for having very favourably received our idea.

The first edition will take place in Pisa, on 16 and 17 March 2020. Guided by the presence and testimony of Varda Dascal, we intend to reflect on the legacy of ideas and style of research that Marcelo leaves us as a dowry. We are deeply convinced that those ideas and style of research can give their contribution to the contemporary philosophical agenda. For this reason, we have asked that The Marcelo Dascal Lectures be held under the auspices and the high patronage of FISP, in the presence of its president, Prof. Luca Scarantino.

In an increasingly interconnected world, in fact, we are called to rediscover the value of dialogue and otherness. According to what Marcelo himself pointed out, on November 11, 2010, at the Peres Center for Peace in Jaffa, in his speech on the occasion of the celebration of the 40th anniversary of his academic scholarship, the theme of dialogue must be taken on beyond all rhetoric, so that it becomes the real – and not the fictional – matrix of an authentic approach to otherness.

All these dimensions have animated Marcelo during the years of his presidency of the IASC. This has allowed him to establish relationships with numerous international scholars, giving them a voice in the international workshops organized by the IASC, with a special attention to young scholars.

During the FISP Assembly, held on the occasion of the XXIII World Congress of Philosophy in Athens, in August 2013, Marcelo Dascal proposed the establishment of an International Award in philosophy, reserved for young scholars. We are glad to announce that FISP, during the meeting of its board, in Sarajevo/Mostar from 20 to 23 May 2018, approved that proposal.

This is a news that the IASC community welcomes with deep gratitude to the President of FISP, Prof. Luca Scarantino, who promoted the implementation of Dascal’s proposal.

To ask more info or to participate in The Marcelo Dascal Lectures, simply send an email, by December 2019, to Giovanni Scarafile (giovanni.scarafile@unipi.it), communicating your presence as a speaker or attendant.  Speakers will have 20 minutes each.

A selection of the best papers will be published with an important international publisher.

At the end of the event, the General Assembly of the IASC is convened.

We remind you that within the Association there are three types of membership:

1) IASC Light Membership: Reserved for those who wish to be informed about the activities of the association and who, for this reason, will continue to receive the Newsletter. It’s completely free.

2) IASC Full Membership: Reserved for those who, in addition to being informed, wish to have an active part in the Association, either by participating in the events of the IASC, or having the right to vote and to stand as a candidate in the roles of the Association. The annual fee is €50 (€30 for students). The right to vote in the 2020 General Assembly is guaranteed to those who at 31 December 2019 will have opted for the Full membership. To do so, you just have to send an email to Giovanni Scarafile (giovanni.scarafile@unipi.it) and follow the instructions on the Become a Member page of our site (www.iasc.me).

3) IASC Honorary Membership: Reserved for scholars who have particularly distinguished themselves in the field of controversies studies. The Honorary membership is awarded annually by the Board of the Association and, as an encouragement to continue in the excellence of the studies, is valid for three years.

During the General Assembly on March 17, 2020, the Honorary Membership will be awarded to Olga Pombo (University of Lisbon) and Pierluigi Barrotta (University of Pisa). The ceremony for the awarding of the two honours will take place during the General Assembly.
